Professor Pascale Guitera

Prof Pascale Guitera is Director of the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Faculty Member of the Melanoma Institute Australia. She is holding her academic position at the University Of Sydney with a particular interest in new diagnosis tools for skin cancers: “My vision is to use my clinical expertise and research leadership to develop and apply new imaging techniques to better diagnose and manage skin cancers. This entails influencing physicists and industry in the early phase of developing innovative tools and national and international collaborations to establish and enhance the implementation of these techniques. Early detection, equity and access to specialists are major health economic strategies for Australia. Tele-dermatology and artificial intelligence are a way to streamline the triage and communication pathways between primary care and specialists and I have a key role in leading this in the next 10 years”.

She is clinician – researcher with a 0.5FTE academic position. She finished her PhD in 2010 at the Curie Institute in Paris. She has multiple International invited presentations (at international conferences, and prestigious institutions like Harvard, Sloan Kettering, Oxford or Nagoya Universities). She has a leadership position at the International Dermoscopy Society, Confocal Working Group, Cutaneous Imaging Expert Resource Group chairing sessions (5) of the Word Melanoma and Word Dermatology Conferences. She is at the forefront of melanoma clinical guidelines development for Australia (diagnosis committee). Via her translational research program, she has gained an international reputation, which has enabled her to recruit high-quality HDRs.

At the date of 2020, she has published 137 publications; with 2906 citations comprising 1883 in the last 5y. Six of these articles have > 130 citations; 40 others >10; 77% of he publications have been published in the top 10% of the dermatology journals (H index is 27). Three of these publications have served as the basis of reimbursement for in vivo confocal microscopy in the USA.

Over the last 5yr, she has been awarded over 14millions of competitive, pharmaceutical and philanthropic funding. In particular, in 2014, she received a grant of 600k from the Cancer Australia as a CIA for a 3yr RADICAL trial (ID 1083221) and in 2018, an infrastructure grant (10M) from ACRF for the Australian Centre of Excellence in Melanoma Imaging & Diagnosis (ACEMID) and 2 NHMRC project grant as CID and CIF respectively (2M) .She is co-recipient Premier’s Award in 2009 and 2017 for Excellence in Translational Cancer Research (CINSW), and received the Wildfire Premier’s Award for the most cited publication in 2013.
