Professor Rhonda Orr

Rhonda’s teaching and research interests have evolved from her industry and clinical experience as a pharmacist, and integrated with Master’s and Doctoral studies in exercise and sport science. Rhonda is an exercise scientist with expertise in sport-related concussion, injury surveillance and quantifying athlete performance and movement patterns in junior and senior athletes from grassroots to elite level in a range of team sports including rugby league, rugby union, football (soccer), Australian football and hockey. Additional research comprises drugs in sport and antidoping. Rhonda also holds an honorary research position with the Children’s Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead.

Sport-related concussion, early exercise interventions to enhance recovery following concussion/traumatic brain injury, and early objective diagnosis of acute concussion. Athlete movement patterns, physical demands and injury in team sports. Injury surveillance in elite developing athletes.Drugs in sport and anti-doping issues associated with high performance sport.Effects of exercise on cognition and academic performance in children and adolescents.

Rhonda is a member of the Sports Injury, Sports Performance, and Activity Promotion research group:

Rhonda is the Unit of Study Coordinator for EXSS3037 Exercise Pharmacology and Immunology in the B Appl Sc (Exercise and Sport Science) and B Appl Sc (Exercise Physiology) degrees, as well as EXSS5064 Nutrition and Pharmacology in the Master Exercise Physiology program. She is currently supervising 7 Masters and Doctoral students and 4 Honours students whose projects cover the topics of sport-related concussion, early interventions to enhance recovery time following concussion, quantifying physical and movement demands in elite rugby league, as well as rugby union and hockey players using Global Positioning Systems technology, injury surveillance in Australian Football and elite junior rugby league, and the effect of exercise on cognition and academic performance in adolescents.
