Dr Ryan Chen

Dr Yu-Wei Ryan Chen has an occupational therapy qualification in Taiwan and had worked in both clinical and research roles in Taiwan's paediatric occupational therapy and rehabilitation clinics before coming to Australia in 2010. He has a strong interest in participation in daily life and well-being of people with disabilities. He and his colleagues developed the PIEL Survey App (http://pielsurvey.org/) as a tool for experience sampling methodology, an ecological momentary assessment, to gather in-the-moment information from people in their daily lives. He is currently involved in several research projects including a line of research using the method to explore dynamic relationships between living contexts and subjective experience of people with and without disabilities.

Dr Chen completed his PhD in 2015 on the investigation of everyday social experience in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. He was the first recipient of the Mary Frances Stephens Scholarship, which supports postgraduate research in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy at the Faculty of Health Sciences with a preference for projects with an inter-disciplinary involvement.

  • Ecological momentary assessment/ experience sampling method
