Professor Shaun Larkin

Dr Shaun Larkin joined the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney as Professor in Health Policy and Financing in January, 2018.

This is a part-time appointment and initially worked to help establish a ‘Business of Health’ post-graduate unit of study that was delivered for the first time in July, 2018.

Following the success of this unit, Shaun was asked to develop and convene a new post-graduate unit of study titled ‘Leadership in Health’ which was delivered for the first time in 2020. Both these units have been delivered on an annual basis since introduction.

In addition to this academic role, over the past six years, Shaun has leveraged his experience at HCF (see below) to become an investor, director and/or advisor to a number of start-ups in the health start-up ecosystem in Australia and the United States. Non-executive director (NED) roles held during this time, beyond the start-up community, include with Prudence Rehab where he is also Chair.

Shaun has also undertaken a number of commissioned consulting roles over the last six years for entities as diverse as a number of large Federal Government Departments; a multi-national medical device manufacturer; health service delivery companies; consulting groups; and financial services providers in both Australia and Asia.

Previous to taking up his University of Sydney role Shaun worked at The Hospitals Contribution Fund of Australia (HCF).

Joining in 1997, he worked as a General Manager in a number of executive roles before, in 2009, he was selected to be Managing Director. Shaun served in the role for seven years. During this time the number of Australians trusting HCF with their health care financing grew from 1.1 million to over 1.5 million.

Upon its establishment in 2000, Shaun also guided the development of the HCF Foundation's research funding program that saw over $16 million invested in more than 50 projects spread across Australia for the benefit of all Australians.

Prior to joining HCF, Shaun was based in Singapore for four years where he led the establishment of a chain of ambulatory medical centres throughout Asia and the CIS. Before this he worked for eight years as an executive for a large private hospital operator (Ramsay Health Care) in Australia and the United States.

An alumnus of Harvard Business School, his academic qualifications include a HlthScD, MHSc, MBA and BHA.
