Dr Shukry Zawahir

Dr. Shukry Zawahir is a research fellow with a distinguished background in pharmacy practice and public health, with a particular focus on infectious disease prevention and control. A central aspect of Dr. Shukry's work involves addressing the global threat of antimicrobial resistance in resource-constrained community settings. He plays a crucial role in conducting Phase II and III clinical trials aimed at developing innovative treatment regimens for tuberculosis infection and prevention.

With over 20 years of experience as a researcher and educator in public health and pharmacy practice, Dr. Shukry also supervises PhD and Honours research candidates. His research is extensive, encompassing active collaborations and projects in Australia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Before his current position, Dr. Shukry held senior academic roles at prestigious tertiary institutions in Sri Lanka and Malaysia, where he made significant contributions to both education and research.

1. Six weeks of daily rifapentine vs. A comparator arm of 12-16 week rifamycin-based treatment of latent M. Tuberculosis infection: Assessment of safety, tolerability and effectiveness (ASTERoiD trial). A multinational Phase III clinical trial.

2. Assessing the impact of rifamycin-based tuberculosis preventative treatment on quality of life using mixed methods – A multinational sub-study within the ASTERoiD trial.

3. Phase II C clinical trial of novel, short-course regimens for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis: CRUSH-TB (Combination Regimens for Shortening TB Treatment).

4. Antimicrobial resistance and One-health intervention project in Vietnam.

5. Prescribing appropriateness criteria for older Sri Lankan adults.

6. Empowering Community Pharmacists in Advancing Tuberculosis Care Cascade: A Pilot Feasibility Study in Vietnam.
