Dr Simone De Morgan is a Senior Research Fellow at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Economics, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of Sydney.

Simone has over 25 years’ experience working in government and non-government organisations which informs her understanding of the importance of partnership and co-design of research with policy makers, health services, health professionals and consumers for research impact on policy and practice.

Simone’s research focuses on developing primary care and community-based models of care to ensure equitable access to multidisciplinary care for adults and adolescents with chronic pain and other chronic diseases.

Simone's research also focuses on health professional education related to pain management, and in particular, innovative and interdisciplinary collaborative eLearning models such as Project ECHO.

Over the last 4-5 years, Simone has undertaken implementation and translational research using participatory action research and participatory evaluation methods. Her research involves partnership with Primary Health Networks across Australia. Simone is also involved in advocacy at federal and state levels.

Simone’s interests include Primary Health Networks, health services research particularly related to primary care, implementation science and co-design of research with policy and practice partners to optimise impact outside academia.

Simone’s current focus is developing primary care and community-based models of care to ensure equitable access to multidisciplinary care for adults and adolescents with chronic pain and other chronic diseases

  • National Consortium Pain Education Projectled by Professor Michael Nicholas, the University of Sydney, 2020-2024 (GO2810) and funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care, Australian Government. Consortium members include the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Economics, Pain Management Research Institute (USyd), Curtin University (WA), University of South Australia (Pain Revolution), Australian Pain Society and the National Ageing Research Institute.

  • Implementation and evaluation of the SA Chronic Pain ECHO Network (2022-23) co-commissioned by ReturnToWorkSA and Country SA Primary Health Network. Funds to conduct the evaluation were provided by the Department of Health and Aged Care, Australian Government (GO2810). Research team: Dr Simone De Morgan, Ms Pippy Walker, Dr Anne Daly, Professor Fiona Blyth and Professor Anne Burke

  • Community-based multidisciplinary model of care for adolescents with chronic pain (2023-24) funded by the Australian Pain Society and Cops For Kids. Research team: Dr Carolyn Berryman, Dr Simone De Morgan, Professor Anne Burke, Dr Nicki Ferencz, Professor Fiona Blyth and Dr Susie Lord

  • Community and Primary Health Care Data Knowledge and Analytics Hub(2023- ) co-led by Dr Christopher Harrison, Dr Julie Gordon and Dr Simone De Morgan. The Hub is a co-initiative between the Community and Primary Health Care Portfolio within FMH and the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Economics. The Hub is a key initiative for the CPHC Portfolio within FMH, and will support the CPHC Strategy, CPHC Network members and other University of Sydney researchers.
