Professor Tricia McCabe
Honorary Professor of Speech Pathology, South Western Sydney Local Health District
Tricia's research, teaching and clinical practice are all focussed on improving treatments for moderate-severe speech impairments in children and adults. Within this area she has a number of interests including (a) treatments for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) (also known as dyspraxia), (b) disorders of speech which cause impairments to production of polysyllabic words and longer linguistic units, (c) the comparison of phonological and articulation treatments to demonstrate relative effectiveness and efficiency and (d) the use of ultrasound for biofeedback in speech pathology.
Professor McCabe is a member of the Communication Sciences and Disorders research team and leads research in Childhood Apraxia of Speech at the University of Sydney.
She is also a member of the Management Committee of speechBITE, a University of Sydney and Speech Pathology Australia project providing the first evidence based practice database of speech pathology treatments. www.speechbite.com
Tricia's current coursework teaching includes:
- CSCD1043 Linguistics and Phonetics (the acoustic phonetics component) to undergraduate Speech Pathology and Hearing and Speech major students
- CSCD5061 Speech Disorders 1 to Masters of Speech Language Pathology students
- CSCD5074 Research and Clinical Leadership to Masters of Speech Language Pathology students
Tricia has previously taught presentation skills to Higher Degree Research Students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health including coaching competitors for the 3 Minute Thesis Competition.
She supervises PhD, Research Masters and Honours research students in speech production and speech disorders in children and adults, ultrasound and other biofeedback in speech pathology assessment and treatment, speech pathology service delivery and evidence based practice.
Tricia's previous higher degree research students include Dr Lauren Chaitow, Dr Johanna Korkalainen, Dr Maryane Gomez, Dr Kate Broome, Dr Claire Eastwood, Dr Jacqui Lim, Dr Manal Alsaad, Dr Jacqui McKechnie, Dr Elizabeth Murray, Dr Donna Thomas, Dr Katrina Blyth, Dr Samantha Warhurst, Ms Laura Crocco,Dr Danielle Stone and Ms Peta Walzak.
