My career started in Spain, where I did my undergraduate and MSc studying urban estuarine beaches at the University of Vigo; and Portugal, where I completed my PhD at the University of Algarve investigating the short and medium term evolution of tidal inlets in a barrier island system. Then I moved to Australia and started looking into the morphodynamics of flood-tide deltas in wave-dominated coasts within the framework of an ARC funded linkage project which was based in Port Stephens. In 2010 I started researching the morphodynamics of sand aprons in reef platforms. In 2011 I was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship to continue the studies in the dynamics of coral sands. I am the Deputy Director of One Tree Island Research Station; between 2012 and 2015 I was the Director.

I am interested in the contemporary processes and morphodynamics of coastal systems. My main current fields of research are:

  1. Morphodynamics of Coral Reefs. Since 2010 we are looking into the processes that transport and accumulate sand in backreef environments. We are also investigating the formation, function and evolution of spurs and grooves. Another part of this research is determining how reef morphodynamics change with changing climate and changing sea levels.
  2. Morphodynamics of beaches in estuaries and bays. In 2016 we started monitoring estuarine beaches; so far we have a few in Botany Bay and the Pittwater. Internationally, we have reseach partners in California, New Zealand, Spain and Brazil.
  3. Morphodynamics of oyster restoration in estuaries, a project in which I am collaborating with Marine Biologists from Sydney University and the Sydney Institute for Marine Science (SIMS). Within this project I study the effects that oyster reefs have in the hydrodynamics and sedimentation processes. We also assess the effect of oysters sediment contamination.
  4. Morphodynamics of Embayed beaches. A monitoring programme including beaches in Sydney's eastern suburbs started at the end of 2015. Currently, we are monitoring Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Coogee and Maroubra.

I am a keen fieldworker and have experience in acquiring and processing hydrodynamic, topographic and bathymetric data. I have also worked with fluorescent tracers for studying sediment transport processes. I also use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool to analyse recent and present data.

Here are some examples of onoging research:

  • Morphodynamics of beaches in estuaries and bays (BEBs). Beach surveys and hydrodynamic measurements from different beaches around the world. This project will suit a PhD and other shorter degrees, including honours please contact me if interested.
  • Oyster reef interactions with hydrodynamics and sediment contamination/restoration. This project is part of large funded research on NSW estuaries; The contamination in estuaries is co-supervised by Bree Morgan. This research is in collaboration with marine biologists from Sydney University and SIMS. Ideally, I would like to engage a PhD student but this project can also be adapted to suit other shorter degrees, including honours.
  • Numerical modelling of coastal processes including estuaries and coral reefs, this research, co-supervised by Tristan Salles builds on previous research including the modelling of wave dissipation in spurs and grooves
