This scholarship has been established for students either taking a Major or Minor and/or Honours in Jewish Civilisation, Thought and Culture or Hebrew language studies and is funded from the Estate of the Late Dr Lena Cansdale.
1. Background
a. This scholarship has been established for students either taking a Major or Minor and/or Honours in Jewish Civilisation, Thought and Culture or Hebrew language studies.
b. The scholarship is funded from the Estate of the Late Dr Lena Cansdale.
2. Eligibility
a. Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled to study in an undergraduate and/or Honours degree in the discipline of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must have completed either:
I. two units of study (JCTCXXXX or HBRWXXXX) in one semester
II. four units of study (JCTCXXXX or HBRWXXXX) within one year.
c. Applicants must have a distinction average in JCTCXXXX or HBRWXXXX units of study.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit, and
II. a personal statement
b. Preference will be given to applicants who:
I. have special interests and/or career aspirations (e.g. Teaching) related to path of study.
II. have not been awarded other bursaries, scholarships or funding support for their studies
c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the: Head of School on recommendation of a selection committee comprised of the Chair of Discipline, and at least two academics from Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $3000 for recipients enrolled full-time.
b. Recipients enrolled part-time will receive the Scholarship valued at 50% of the Scholarship value under clause 4a.
c. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment on receipt of the Scholarship Acceptance Form.
d. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted, except in the case of Honours as approved by the Head of School on the recommendation of the Chair of the Discipline.
e. The Scholarship is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.
f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
g. No other amount is payable.
5. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
