Associate Professor Fiona Stanaway

Fiona Stanaway is a medical doctor and clinical epidemiologist who is passionate about the use of research to address unequal health outcomes within ethnically diverse populations. She has an MBBS (Hons) (University of Queensland), an MPH (University of Sydney), and a PHD in epidemiology (University of Sydney).

Fiona’s contributions stem from her PhD, in which she established the impacts of low socioeconomic status and social relationships on the health of older male Italian immigrants in Australia. This research was part of the Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project (CHAMP) study, to which she has remained a key contributor post-PhD. Fiona’s expertise in the health of older people from diverse backgrounds has been acknowledged by her appointment as convenor of the special interest group on Culturally and Linguistically Diverse older adults for the Australasian Association of Gerontology (2019-2022).

In recent years, Fiona has expanded her research on the health of older migrant populations by leading a project on translation and cultural adaptation of scales to measure social isolation and social support in older Chinese migrants in Sydney. This has resulted in a study of social relationships in older Chinese migrants with a particular focus on the use of technology to maintain relationships across distance.

The next stage of her research career will involve consolidating her key insights via an MRFF funded project on ethnic inequalities in cardiovascular disease. This will generate unique and new capacity to examine ethnic inequalities in the incidence, prognosis and evidence-based management of cardiovascular disease. It will do this by connecting multiple Commonwealth and State datasets. The addition of this data linkage initiative to Australia’s health data infrastructure will shed important new light on the social and economic framing of cardiovascular disease.

Fiona has worked at the University of Sydney since 2003, based in the School of Public Health. She brings her methodological expertise to the training of the next generation of health professionals through her involvement in the University of Sydney Graduate Medical Program and her role as Associate Professor in the Master of Clinical Epidemiology Program. She has over 15 years of experience in teaching clinicians how to interpret evidence and apply it to their clinical practice. Her excellent standard of teaching has been recognised by receiving a University of Sydney Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching in 2020. Her expertise in evidence appraisal has also led to her being appointed as a member of the Therapeutic Goods Administration Advisory Committee on Medical Devices (ACMD) by the then health minister Greg Hunt. She is also co-convenor of the teaching special interest group for the Australasian Association of Epidemiology.

Fiona’s commitment to community engagement is exemplified in her role over many years in providing health screening services for those applying for Australian visas. Fiona was born in Australia but has also lived and worked in Taiwan and France and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Italian and French, in addition to her native English. She has also convinced herself that she can speak Spanish after watching multiple Spanish series on Netflix.

Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project (CHAMP). This is a cohort study of men aged 70 years and over at baseline, living in several inner Western Sydney suburbs. Fiona’s work on CHAMP has focused on the overseas born men in CHAMP (50% of the sample).

Social isolation and social support in older Chinese migrants in Sydney. This project has translated and culturally adapted several scales to measure various aspects of social relationships in older Chinese migrants. It has included the development of a new scale to measure transnational relationships.

Ethnic inequalities in cardiovascular disease. This project is using linked data to examine ethnic inequalities in the incidence, prognosis and evidence-based management of cardiovascular disease.
