Associate Professor Jennifer Fraser

Associate Professor Jennifer Fraser is a Registered Nurse and full time academic at Sydney Nursing School in the Faculty of Medicine and Health where she holds the position of Research Education Academic Director (READ) for Patyegarang (Sydney Central) Precinct. Jennifer is also a Research Integrity Advisor for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Research Ethics and Integrity Office. She has a sustained record of excellence in teaching and research across the domains of paediatric nursing, child health, child protection and health services research. She currently holds an appointment in the Nursing Research Unit at the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and a lead CI for Nursing in the Clinical Academic Group for Child and Adolescent Health, Sydney Health Partners.

Jennifer's research in public health approaches to child protection has contributed to ongoing implementation of nurse-home visiting programs throughout Australia. She is widely considered to be one of Australia’s leading experts in nurse home-visiting research, and is known internationally for her work in this field. Her research into the role of nursing at the intersection of health and child protection services has had a significant impact on national policy and practice in Australia.

Another area of research expertise has been mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect by health professionals. She has been at the forefront of efforts to evaluate a number of child protection strategies, validating and testing evaluation tools such as the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Self-Efficacy questionnaire. This questionnaire is now used extensively in child protection research in Chinese and English versions. She has conducted large studies overseas, including an internationally-funded study of paediatric emergency department responses to child injury in Vietnam. Legislation was enacted in Vietnam in 2017 to protect women and children from violence. The research assisted with building workforce capacity and evidence based practice at the intersection of health, welfare and community services.

This work has been followed up with significant research funding in Australia, supporting efforts to streamline recognition and response to family violence in NSW health settings. This work is influencing statewide policy and practice using e-technology to prompt nurses and doctors to more easily detect suspicious child injuries. Her most recent work aims to influence statewide policy and practice to embed cultural safety in paediatric health settings for Aboriginal families at risk of becoming engaged with child protection authorities. Fraser is an experienced supervisor of higher degree candidates.
