Professor Paulo Ferreira

Professor Paulo Ferreira is a physiotherapist with a Masters degree in Sports Rehabilitation from the University of Alberta – Canada, and a PhD in management of low back pain from the University of Sydney.

Paulo is the top NHMRC Research Fellow in Australia in the Industry category. His research is widely recognised by its novelty. It bridges the gap between genetics and the environment, by investigating the relationship between lifestyle factors and back pain in twins. Paulo is currently the most published scientist in this field(web of science – March 2019: back pain/physical activity/twins), and He translates the output that he generates with his research in twins into innovative approaches to help people in need in the community – particularly those suffering from chronic low back pain in rural Australia.

Paulo has published >200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, 60% as a senior/leading author (i.e. first, second, or last author). His work has been cited >10,000 times, andhisH-index is 56 (GoogleScholar–May 2020) which places him in the top 1% most published low back pain researchers internationally(web of science–March 2019). He publishes in the most prestigious and highly-ranked journals, not only in his discipline of work, but also overall in the medical and health fields. One example is the work that He led with the top 30 world leaders in low back pain research, resulting in three publications in the prestigious journal Lancet (IF=53) in 2018.

His research is impactful. It has been incorporated in major clinical guidelines internationally and led to significant reductions in low value care in low back pain. The impact of the findings of his studies attract extensive media attention (e.g. CBS USA, BBC UK,SBS News, ABC morning News, Daily Express, The Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald, and The Age), and ranks in the top 5% of all research outputs scored by Altmetrics(BMJ Altmetrics–March 2019).

Paulo’s vision for research, and his ability as an independent, self-directed researcher can be evidenced by his exceptional research funding totalling >$10M, including NHMRC project grant, NHMRC partnership grant ($2.3M), and NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence ($2.5M), as well as funding from a variety of sources in Australia (e.g. Arthritis Australia, Sydney Health Partners), and international agencies such as IMDR USA, Murcia Research Foundation Spain, Erasmus EU, and CNPq Brazil.

Paulo's research interests are in the management of Low Back Pain, Musculoskeletal Pain, Spinal Biomechanics and Evidence Based Practice.

Professor Paulo Ferreira has supervised >50 research students among PhDs, Masters, and Honors, and is currently supervising 9 research students including 6 PhDs, 1 Masters, and 2 Honors.
