Dr Priya Iyer

Dr Priya Iyer is a dedicated accredited practising dietitian and passionate researcher with a profound commitment to advancing nutritional care in spinal cord injury (SCI). With extensive clinical experience spanning over two decades, predominantly as a clinical lead within a leading spinal and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation facility in NSW for most of that time, Priya continues to actively pursue research in SCI nutrition. Priya’s vision is to radically transform nutrition care and improve health outcomes for persons with SCI.

Inspired by one of her patients and her desire to make a tangible impact on individuals' lives through nutrition, Priya embarked on a PhD journey focused on identifying opportunities to improve cardiometabolic health in adults with SCI in spinal rehabilitation. Her doctoral research delved into the complex interplay between hospital food services, patients’ food choices, and cardiometabolic health of adults in spinal rehabilitation.

Priya is deeply committed to transforming scientific knowledge from her research into change in practice at a broad level and at an individual level, providing recommendations that empower individuals to make informed choices. As a practising dietitian, she has worked with and continues to work with diverse populations, providing individualised nutrition intervention to enable clients to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.

Recently, Priya has embarked on the next phase of her career within academia, where she plans to continue her research pursuits while also expanding her advocacy efforts for evidence-based nutrition care and interventions in SCI. Priya is keen to make a significant impact by connecting academia and clinical practice seamlessly to shape the future nutrition care and practice in SCI. Priya believes that collaborating with local and global experts in the field including the individuals with SCI is crucial to see this to fruition.

Priya is also passionate about equity and accessibility of quality nutrition care which translate into better outcomes for individuals with SCI. Priya is striving to reduce the gap and increase the reach by collaborating with the global research and clinical community to achieve this vision.

Priya has a range of research interests, including:
