Associate Professor Ronald Castelino
Ronald Castelino is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine and Health, School of Pharmacy. He is a practising renal pharmacist (Blacktown Hospital) with a track record in translational research relevant to renal medicine. He is also interested in health services research that focusses on developing interventions to improve medication safety and quality use of medicines.
Ron continues to practice as a renal pharmacist and has ongoing interest in a widerange of projects involving quality use of medicines in the hospital setting, and the provision of medication review services as patients are admitted to hospital from the community, and then discharged home again.
Ron's particular interest lies in promoting optimal use of medications in kidney disease. His collaborative work aims to support prescribers in choosing the best agent for individual patients, and then to facilitate patients achieving the best possible outcomes from their therapy. His ongoing projects include an exploration of adherence to medications among people with kidney disease, reporting of adverse drug reactions, factors influencing outcomes of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients, clinical characteristics of patients with acute kidney injury, psychosocial issues affecting end-stage kidney disease patients and optimising the use of antimicrobials.
Ron's wide-rangingquality use of medicines projects have involved the usage of metformin in type 2 diabetes mellitus, medication use in patients with chronic kidney disease, early detection and prevention of chronic kidney disease, understanding determinants of medication adherence and current adherence assessment practices in Australian Haemodialysis patients, development of a prediction score for adverse drug reaction-related hospital admission, and medication appropriateness and regimen complexity in chronic kidney disease.
Ron has successfully supervised or co-supervisedpharmacy/nursing Honour’s students (9), Master of Pharmacy (2), and PhD candidates (7), to completion. These students have presented their research findings as paper and poster presentations at various national conferences, and in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Ron coordinates and teaches into NURS5088–Pharmacology for Advanced Practice, a postgraduate unit in the Nurse Practitioner program. He also coordinates and delivers NURS2001: Pharmacology & Therapeutics 1 to Bachelor of Nursing students and NURS 5043: Understanding Health and Managing Disease in the Master of Nursing program.
To support his teaching, Ron has completed a postgraduate study in the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching. He has received two Teaching Merit Certificates in recognition of his teaching expertise and is acknowledged by his colleagues for the support and mentorship he offers.
