Dr Vlasios Brakoulias

Professor Vlasios Brakoulias is a psychiatrist with international recognition for his research and clinical work in the field of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. He is also a local expert who regularly gives lectures on anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress and related disorders, psychosocial aspects of treatment, prevention and early intervention of mental disorders and scientific publishing. Prof. Brakoulias enjoys teaching and is a Professor with the Sydney Medical School of The University of Sydney. Prof Brakoulias has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, has presented at numerous international conferences, and served as the Editor in Chief of the medical journal called Australasian Psychiatry from 2014 to January 2024. Prof Brakoulias completed his Fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists with an Advanced Certificate in the Psychotherapies in 2007 and was awarded a PhD by The University of Sydney for his research into obsessive-compulsive disorder in 2012. Prof Brakoulias was the Executive Director of the Mental Health Service for the Western Sydney Local Health District from 2019 to 2023 where he led major mental health transformation projects culminating in being awarded $460 million to transform the mental health service at Westmead.
Prof Brakoulias completed his PhD in 2012 where he assessed for subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is the chief investigator in a large longitudinal assessment of the characteristics of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder called The Nepean OCD Study. This study is continuing to recruit participants with OCD. He is particularly interested in the role of belief in obsessive-compulsive disorder and other mental disorders and developed the Nepean Belief Scale (NBS). During his fellowship with the Institute of Psychiatry he assessed psychotherapeutic interventions for delusions and other abberant beliefs. Prof Brakoulias regularly gives lectures and tutorials to medical students, general practitioners, psychiatry trainees and psychiatrists on the topics of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder and psychosocial treatments for schizophrenia. He delivers skills based sessions relating to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and side effects of psychotropic medication. Prof Brakoulias also values giving talks to the general community aimed at improving mental health literacy and promoting mental health and wellbeing.
