Associate Professor Ying Zhang

Associate Professor Ying Zhang is a senior epidemiologist, a dedicated researcher and an educator on climate change and global health. She has led national and international research projects in the field with over 170 publications, ranked in the top 0.1% worldwide of the research on temperature and top 0.3% worldwide on floods and health, No. 5 in Australia (ExpertScape).Ying's research aims to build community resilience to changing climate and environment, focusing on the most vulnerable populations in the Asia Pacific Region such as the older, the young, ethnic minorities, and people in remote areas.Ying has been the Co-Chair of the MJA-Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change in Australia since 2017, which produces annual reports to track progress on health and climate change. Ying is the Founder and Co-Convenor of theSustainability, Climate and Health Collaboration, and Deputy Director of the China Studies Centreat the University of Sydney. Ying is keen on promoting research translation and policy advocacy to address health and climate change issues and has been the Chair of the Capacity Building Committee of the WHO Civil Society Working Group on Climate Change and Health 2021-2023. She has been awarded prestigious fellowships, such as the Australian Prime Minister Endeavor Fellowship and the Homeward Bound Fellowship, which included a three-week trip to Antarctica in 2019. Ying has demonstrated professional excellence and a significant level of experience in environmental epidemiology, awarded Fellow of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) in 2022 and the Tony McMichael Public Health Ecology and Environment Award by the Public Health Association Australia in 2023.

- Climate change and global public health, including environmental health impact assessment related to climate change / extreme weather events, and building community resilience to better adapt to climate change and weather extremes;

- Healthy ageing in a warming climate;

- Global health education and research that could contribute to a sustainable, climate-resillient and zero-emission society for all.

Ying teaches and coordinates courses for Master of Public Health and Master of Global Health at the School of Public Health, e.g. PUBH5551 Climate Change and Public Health and GLOH5301 Global Health Capstone.

Ying is a registered primary supervisor of higher degree research students at the University of Sydney. Enquries about poential PhD projects on climate change, weather extremes and global health could be sent directly to Ying's email.

Ying also teaches short courses on epidemiology in several Chinese universities, as an invited guest lecturer and co-supervisor of postgraduate research students.
